Our donkey update – 12th September 2024

This week we are bringing you an update on the gorgeous donkeys at our Sanctuary in Israel. Our CEO, Andy, and our volunteer vet, Dr Anna, have been out to the Sanctuary to do their usual checks on our rescue residents. You can see some of their photos in this week’s e-news.

Last week, due to the level of unrest around Nablus, Dr Rakan wasn’t able to carry out his mobile vet clinics with Wael and Nour, but was able to run clinics from our hospital as usual. We’re pleased to report he’s now back on the road again along with our other teams headed up by Dr Eyed and Dr Omran, helping working donkeys in need in the West Bank.

Thank you once again for all your support to our teams in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt. You are making a massive difference to the lives of so many donkeys, mules and horses.

News from Israel

Life at the Sanctuary has been busy, with preparations beginning for winter. The team have been constructing new shallow feeders to help reduce the risk of eye damage when the donkeys are digging around in their hay feeders eating tasty heads of wheat or barley.

We’re careful to ensure some distance is kept between water containers and food troughs out in the paddock – this means the donkeys will maintain a good level of activity throughout the day. Here Dr Anna is being followed around the paddock!

Dr Anna identified that Be’eri has ‘parrot mouth’. This is an overbite and nothing to be overly concerned about. But as Be’eri is small for his age he has been given extra food rations and moved out of the main herd into Group C, where we’re able to keep a closer eye on him.

Last week the farrier visited the Sanctuary and carried out hoof trims and treatments. Along with monthly weigh-ins and regular dental check ups, you can rest assured our donkeys receive the very best of care.

This week we’ll leave you with a short video – here you’ll see our donkeys enjoying a tasty treat of dried avocado leaves. A bit like we’d enjoy a snack of some crisps (that’s chips to our friends over in the US and Canada!) Turn up your sound and listen to that crunch!

Thank you!

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in Egypt, the West Bank, and Gaza, as well as care for all the animals at our sanctuary in Israel, and our rescue centre and hospital over in the West Bank.

We hope this update has helped to show you how your donations are helping donkeys in desperate need – thank you for your support!
