Our donkey update – 19th September 2024

Dr Shaaban has sent us a report this week of some of the donkeys the mobile vet team have been able to help. This includes donkeys seen during their regular kiln visits, as well as emergency call outs.

As our mobile vet team’s reputation grows in El Saf, we are being contacted more and more by owners who realise their donkeys need treatment. So we will be bringing you exciting news next month of our plans to extend our work to help even more donkeys and mules. We can only do this with your support, so thank you so much.

News from Egypt

Dr Shaaban’s report this week includes just a few examples of the many donkeys they have provided treatment to this week. We hope the photos show you how your donations have such a positive impact.

Dr Shaaban told us: “We recently provided rasping treatment to this donkey – it was suffering from recurrent colic, due to longstanding dental problems”.

Dr Shaaban examined the donkey and discovered he was in desperate need of dental work

Using a mechanical rasper is skilled work, filing down the teeth to make sure the donkey is able to eat comfortably.

Dr Shaaban was able rasp the donkey’s teeth using a mechanical rasper you have helped to fund

Dr Shaaban explained how another donkey needed urgent help: “this donkey had haematuria (blood in his urine) for three days. He also had a fever, severe dehydration, a high heart rate, shall breathing and pale gums. We believe the donkey was showing signs of trauma from being kicked by a mule.”

“We provided intensive treatment – antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, fluids and a blood transfusion from a donor donkey. This was in case of internal bleeding. Finally we catheterised the donkey and flushed through fluids to check our treatment had worked.”

Our team also provide training to local vets in equine care. Here you can see Dr Shaaban explaining hoof radiology (x-rays). It’s vital these trainee vets are fully equipped to provide treatment to equines, so an important part of our work is training the next generation

Thank you!

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in Egypt, the West Bank, and Gaza, as well as care for all the animals at our sanctuary in Israel, and our rescue centre and hospital over in the West Bank.

We hope this update has helped to show you how your donations are helping donkeys in desperate need – thank you for your support!
