Our donkey update – 23rd January 2025

We know you will be eager to hear news from Gaza now the ceasefire is in place, and we promise to bring you an update on the medical and food aid we have sent to Dr Saif as soon as we can.

Today I’d like to tell you about Anna, who lives at our Sanctuary in Israel. Your support not only helps us to achieve so much through the mobile teams in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel, but also support the donkeys in our care at the Sanctuary and our Rescue Centre.

I do hope you enjoy reading this story shared by out team – only possible thanks to your support.

News from Israel

A few years ago, a donkey named Gali arrived at our sanctuary. She was not only in poor condition – but was also pregnant, as well as caring for her other young foal called Yalon.

From the very beginning, we knew Gali needed special care—not only to help her recover but also to ensure she could safely bring her foal into the world under the best possible conditions.

Our team came together to provide her with dedicated care, including a special diet, regular veterinary check ups, and plenty of love and attention.

Gali soon settled into Sanctuary life, being cared for with her son Yalon and new daughter, Anna

A few months later Gali gave birth to Anna—a special little foal who immediately captured everyone’s heart.

Anna was born into a different world, one without hardship, suffering, or neglect. The love and care she received from the team, along with the peaceful environment in which she grew up, turned her into a lively and friendly donkey.

She became a favourite among the staff and she soon became a symbol for us—a symbol of hope, recovery, and new beginnings created through compassion.

A few weeks ago the team noticed Anna limping, and after an examination, it was discovered that she had an abscess in her hoof.

This is a relatively common condition caused by small stones pressing on the hoof or due to a particularly sensitive hoof.

Following the instructions of Dr Eliran, our sanctuary vet, Anna began treatment that included cleaning and bandaging her hoof. The team continued to monitor her daily, ensuring she had everything she needed.

Anna is now fully recovered, all thanks to your support

Thankfully Anna recovered quickly and is now back to running and playing happily at the sanctuary – and she continues to remind us just how important our work is.

Thank you for all your support helping to care for donkeys like Anna.

Thank you ♥️♥️

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt. You’re also helping to fund our hospital in Nablus in the West Bank and care for our rescue donkeys in Arrana, as well as our donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel.

Our Sanctuary cares for over 180 donkeys (and a few horses!) who receive all the love and care they deserve. Thank you.
