Our donkey update – 17th April 2025

As the Easter long weekend approaches here in the UK, I hope you’re looking forward to a well-earned break and that it brings a little sunshine your way too.

Over in our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank, life is good for our donkeys – thanks to your continued support. This week, we’re sharing a glimpse of daily life in their forever homes, and we hope it brings a smile to your face.

And if you missed it, there’s still time to support our Easter appeal to equip a vet. Every gift makes a real difference – but if you’re not in a position to donate right now, sharing the appeal with friends or family is another way to help.

Thank you, as always. You’re helping transform the lives of thousands of donkeys in some of the most challenging areas of the world.

News from our Sanctuaries

Now Spring is here, and the weather has become warmer. The staff at our sanctuary in Gan Yoshiya, Israel have begun efforts to control flies by placing fly traps throughout the sanctuary. Flies can be a real irritant to our donkeys in the summer.

Fly traps have been strategically positioned around the perimeter of the sanctuary to reduce fly populations and minimise irritation to the donkeys.

One of the team’s daily tasks is chopping hay for our older donkeys, who may struggle with chewing, and for those with health issues. This helps ensure they receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy and well. We have a special hay chopper for this task – funded by your support.

Chopped hay is a daily essential for our older donkeys and those needing a little extra care.

Our donkeys at the rescue centre in Arrana, the West Bank, are enjoying the spring, grazing on the fresh green grass provided by our team there, headed up by Mahmoud.

Spring has arrived at our rescue centre in Arrana too.

Spring brings new life and energy to our sanctuaries, and it’s heartwarming to see the donkeys relaxed and content. Many arrived here after lives of hardship and it’s thanks to your support that they now have safe spaces to roam, nutritious food, and the care they need to thrive.

The donkeys really enjoy freshly chopped grass

Back at our sanctuary in Gan Yoshiya, the donkeys are just as content and always happy to tuck into a tasty snack! Some crisp lettuce leaves are a firm favourite, and it’s a joy to watch them munching away, ears flicking and tails swishing.

Moussa hands out some lettuce leaves – the donkeys love their snacks!

It’s these simple pleasures – fresh greens, kindness, and a peaceful place to rest that make all the difference. And it’s your generosity that makes it all possible.

Thank you ♥️♥️

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt. You’re also helping to fund our hospital in Nablus in the West Bank and care for our rescue donkeys in Arrana, as well as our donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel.

The donkeys at Gan Yoshiya and Arrana wish you a joyful Easter break and a lovely start to spring.
