Our donkey update – 10th October 2024

Dr. Rakan and Nour recently visited Arrana to carry out health checks on our rescued donkeys who live there. They were pleased to see all the donkeys in robust health – just look at their glossy coats!

He was also able to capture the donkeys having a wonderful gallop around the paddock – you can see Miriam above. We hope these photos show how your support has transformed the lives of these beautiful donkeys. They truly are living their best lives.

It’s incredible to think our new rescue centre in Arrana was built less than a year ago, thanks entirely to the donations you and other supporters gave to our Christmas appeal last year.

Our vet teams perform incredible work under challenging circumstances, but their tireless efforts are only possible due to generous supporters like you. Thank you so much.

News from Arrana in the West Bank

Dr Rakan and Nour took a trip out to our rescue centre in Arrana last week. The rescue centre is home to 34 donkeys who have experienced abuse or neglect, or been abandoned.

Rakan the donkey is now safe and well at his new home in Arrana

Rakan is just one example of how a donkey’s life can be transformed thanks to veterinary treatment and lots of loving care. When Dr Rakan rescued Rakan the donkey, his ear had been set on fire. This poor donkey had suffered terrible abuse but thanks to Dr Rakan, he is now healthy and living at Arrana, his forever home.

Pen is just three years old and was born in Nablus

Little Pen is now three years old and living his best life at Arrana. He was born in Nablus, at our hospital run by Dr Rakan. Our Nablus hospital provides care to donkeys who need extra support when they first arrive at Safe Haven – these might be abuse cases or babies like Pen.

Blondie is another rescue donkey who needed vital veterinary care upon arrival at Arrana

When Dr Rakan was called out to visit Blondie, he was suffering from severe neglect. He was dehydrated and weak. Blondie’s elderly owner just wasn’t able to provide the much needed care the donkey needed, so he was surrendered to Dr Rakan who nursed the donkey back to full health at our hospital in Nablus. Blondie is now thriving at his forever home in Arrana.

Mahmoud cares for the donkeys at Arrana day to day

Dr. Rakan, Nour, and Wael make regular visits to Arrana to provide veterinary care, trim hooves, and provide routine vaccinations. However, the daily care of these donkeys is managed by Mahmoud.

Nour made sure all the donkeys’ hooves were trimmed

Our donkeys are so inquisitive! You can see them keeping a close eye on Nour as he trims the residents’ hooves. Soon the donkeys were back out in the paddock and enjoy a good gallop – click the video below to see the donkey stampede!
