A few weeks ago we welcomed three new rescue donkeys to the Sanctuary in Israel – and this week we’re delighted to introduce you to them!
The two male donkeys were both found in a place called Malkia – on the border with Lebanon. A local man had found them and paid for treatment by a vet and farrier, but he knew he could not release them back into the wild due to fires in the area as a result of the ongoing war.
The third donkey – a female was also found in a small town called Harish. She had been tied by her legs in the blazing sunshine without any food, water or shade. We’re pleased to say she’s now at our Sanctuary, safe and well.
You can read more about their arrivals in our report this week. We hope you enjoy seeing how your support is helping us to offer forever homes for rescue donkeys in need.
News from the Sanctuary
Our Sanctuary team were contacted a few weeks ago about two male donkeys found on the border with Lebanon. One of the donkeys had severe laminitis on all fours legs and had received treatment from a local vet and farrier but after four months, the man who rescued them realised he could not release them back into the wild. That’s when he contacted us.
When the two male donkeys arrived at the Sanctuary, Eliran, our vet, gave them a check up and confirmed they were a little overweight but otherwise the grey donkey – now called Oren – was in good health. Eliran carried out X-rays on the white donkey – now called Sam – and unfortunately found he had laminitis in all four legs. Both donkeys were microchipped and received tetanus and rabies vaccines.
Vivian, the female donkey, is around 12-13 years old and was found in a small town called Harish. She had been tied by her legs in the blazing sunshine without any food, water or shade. Eliran, our vet, provided a thorough check up to Vivian and she was soon integrated with the main herd.
We’ll keep you updated on the new donkeys as they settle in, but in the meantime here are a few photos of the other donkeys at the Sanctuary. They’ve been enjoying some lovely sunshine, along with cucumber and carrot treats!
Sometimes you just have to have a lie down after your carrot snack when it’s so hot in Israel!
Thank you!
It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in Egypt, the West Bank, and Gaza, as well as care for all the animals at our sanctuary in Israel, and our rescue centre and hospital over in the West Bank.
We hope this update has helped to show you how your donations are helping donkeys in desperate need – thank you for your support!
