Our donkey update – 18th July 2024

This week we’re delighted to bring you an update on a donkey Dr Rakan provided emergency support to a few weeks ago.

You may remember Dr Rakan was called out on an emergency visit to the Balata Refugee Camp to help a poor donkey – called William – in dire need. Dr Rakan has been back to check up on his progress – and you can see how well he’s recovered in our update today.

We hope you enjoy seeing how your kind donations are helping to care for working donkeys, so they can live better lives.

News from the West Bank

Last month we shared a story of William, a donkey who had fallen while pulling a cart during the particularly hot weather in the West Bank. He was very unwell, and without Dr Rakan’s veterinary care he would have died.

Dr Rakan was called out to help a donkey in need – urgently transporting him to the Nablus hospital to receive veterinary care.

William spent 10 days at our Nablus hospital and was soon recovering well thanks to Dr Rakan’s care. Once he was well enough, Dr Rakan returned him to his owner at the Balata Refugee Camp.

Dr Rakan recently visited to see how William was getting on, and we’re pleased to report he’s nearly back to full health!

It’s only with your support that we’re able to offer free veterinary care to communities that have no access to vets – they rely on Dr Rakan’s mobile clinic. And most importantly the owner has followed Dr Rakan’s advice and is still resting him, providing fresh water, grain and hay.

Our other vet teams in the West Bank, headed up by Dr Omran and Dr Eyed, have also been busy this week. Below you can see Dr Eyed visiting a village called Halhoul, near Hebron where he treated 15 animals.

Dr Eyed provided care to 15 animals thanks to your support

Dr Eyed (and our other vets) will always talk to local children as part of our education programme. The children love to receive our booklets about donkey care.

Meanwhile, Dr Omran visited an area called Abu El Najeil, where he treated 10 animals, including the shepherd donkey you can see below.

Shepherd donkeys are a vital part of rural life in the West Bank.

Thank you!

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in Egypt, the West Bank, and Gaza, as well as care for all the animals at our sanctuary in Israel, and our rescue centre and hospital over in the West Bank.

We hope this update has helped to show you how your donations are helping donkeys in desperate need – thank you for your support!
