We were delighted at the end of August to celebrate the birth of a baby donkey at our rescue centre in the Palestinian city of Nablus, by naming the new arrival Pen, as a tribute to Pen Farthing, founder of Nowzad, that re-united street dogs in Afghanistan with the troops who had adopted them.
Any Foxcroft, Chief Executive of Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land said: “Pen has done an amazing job rescuing animals in a combat zone. Our donkeys are very often rescued from traumatic situations, so we thought it was appropriate that we recognise his incredible achievements, from one charity working in a high-risk environment, to the founder of another one in similar circumstances.”
“ Mother and baby Pen are both doing well,” added Andy, “ We hope that one day Pen will be able to come to Nablus and meet his namesake.”
